World Cancer Day aims to prevent millions of deaths each year by raising awareness and education about cancer, and pressing governments and individuals across the world to take action against the disease.
#Be aware
Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide (1) and casualties of this battle cost us nearly 10 million deaths in 2020. The most common types of cancer include breast, lung, colorectal, prostate, skin (non-melanoma), and stomach.
The leading causes of cancer deaths are lung, colorectal, liver, stomach, and breast. Some 400,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year and the most common type varies by country.
Cancer occurs from the transformation of normal cells into tumor cells and is caused by genetic factors and external agents such as physical, chemical, and biological carcinogens ( talking about genetics as well as epigenetics).
The risk factors include smoking, alcohol consumption, poor diet, lack of physical activity, and air pollution. Chronic infections such as those caused by Helicobacter pylori, HPV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C viruses, and Epstein Barr (2) are also risk factors.
#Reducing Cancer Burden: The Importance of Risk Factor Awareness and Early Detection
Around 30-50% of cancers can be prevented by avoiding risk factors and applying evidence-based preventive strategies. Early detection and appropriate treatment can also reduce the burden of cancer.
